The Driver Training Bootcamp provides a statewide standard for safety and informational training, but public transit employees may also take elective courses covering a variety of topics.
Driver Training Bootcamp
This two-day (16 hours) hands-on and interactive training is a combination of our Passenger Assistance Safety and Sensitivity course and Defensive Driving course. Participants have the option of attending one or both days. Day 1 is typically the PASS course and Day 2 is typically the DD course. Training includes lectures, hands-on activities, door-to-door simulations, driving simulations, fire extinguisher demonstration and practice, and other activities.
Other Courses Offered

The 2021 driver training schedule is available here. Registration for courses should be completed via the transit manager portal. Course descriptions, times, locations, and any special instructions regarding courses will be found in the portal.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Nebraska Safety Center has decided to make all transit driver training for the first quarter of 2021 virtual. These distance learning courses will be facilitated via Zoom and registration will be limited. These courses may still have a “location” listed on the Transit Manager Portal as well. We encourage managers to only register drivers for those courses that they would have traditionally gone to in-person. Our hope is to begin regular, in-person training again starting in April, but of course, that could be subject to change.
If you register drivers for Distance Learning courses, please make sure to read and follow the Distance Learning Guidelines. Failure to do so may result in drivers not receiving continuing education credit.
Nebraska Rural Public Transportation Driver Training Requirements
Effective January 1, 2014, driver training requirements are applicable to all 5311 sub-recipients receiving federal and state operating assistance for public transit systems in Nebraska. The minimum training is required of all drivers operating a public transit vehicle (full-time, part-time, substitute, volunteer, etc). Failure to comply with the training requirements will jeopardize future funding.
NEW: Online Driver Training
Some courses are now offered as online courses. More information can be found here.
**Driver training is for eligible drivers hired by a Nebraska transit agency receiving 5310 or 5311 funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation. If you are unsure of your eligibility please contact Mitchell Locken at 402-817-2013 or Kari Ruse at 402-479-4694.**
